In spring 2006, Pratt Fellow Andy Longenecker met with Assistant Dean Martha Absher, who
directs the Pratt Fellows Program, to discuss his idea of an engineering research journal
published by Pratt undergraduates. Andy, a ME/BME/Econ major and President of the
Engineering Student Government for 2006-2007, wanted a forum for Pratt undergraduates to share their interest and success in research. In the following months, Andy and Dean Absher worked through many issues, problems, and concepts, and sought the input of many faculty members.
By the fall of 2006, Andy had brought on board Neha Krishnamohan, class of 2008, BME/Econ major, and new Engineering Student Government President for 2007-2008, and Mary Ellen Koran, class of 2009, BME major and Chem. minor. Since that time, Chief Editors Neha and Mary Ellen have carried the load in organizing the developing the new Journal, working with Dean Absher. In fall 2006, Mary Ellen came up with the name JUPITER and its acronym, Journal for Undergraduate Publication In Technology and Engineering Research. Dr. Howard Clark agreed to serve as Senior Editor and has provided important support and encouragement to the developing journal as well as many valuable ideas. Drs. John Dolbow (CEE), Claudia Gunsch (CEE), Dan Sorin (ECE), Jingdong Tian (BME), Ben Yellen (MEMS), and Lingchong You (BME) have joined JUPITER as Faculty Editors. Many meetings in Dean Absher’s office later, JUPITER had its editorial board, faculty editors, graduate student reviewers, and undergraduate reviewers. Valuable training sessions in how to review research papers were given to our undergraduate editors by Professors Dan Sorin, Lingchong You, and John Dolbow. Sylvia Qu, class of 2009 and BME/Bio. major with a minor in photography, did the initial website design and development. Final planning meetings were held in Dean Absher’s office in Spring and Summer 2008, and by Fall 2008, JUPITER was launched.
Many thanks to all who contributed time and effort to make JUPITER a reality here at Pratt!
Martha Absher, Associate Dean, Pratt School of Engineering
Director, JUPITER
